When Aloysius expressed his desire to pursue a medical career, Georgius exploded and pressured his son into a military career to uphold the Rothfeld family’s honour. Despite trying to stand his ground with the support of his mother, the abusive behaviour against him and his mother resulted in him relenting and pursuing the desired military career.
When he left the house for his training, he hoped the situation would change and his sacrifice would not be in vain. However, the abuse towards his mother continued. Meanwhile, Aloysius was having a hard time in the military. He hated it and never felt like he fit in. But Aloysius pushed through to make his father proud and happy again. However, in 1859 Mariëtte fled the house and stayed with friends in Austria and later Prussia. When Aloysius heard of this, he used his contacts to look for an apartment for her, which he found in Lutheria
