So, from a very young age, Bernardus worked on the farm, starting with simple tasks such as caring for the small animals and helping with the harvest. Bernardus loved the outdoors and spent as much time as he could in the fields and with the animals. His father was eager to teach him all there was to know about farming, and Bernardus looked up to him.

When Bernardus was sixteen, he inherited the entire estate from his father. Although he saw this as an honour, Bernardus was nervous about maintaining the farm to his father’s standards. The farm had suffered from decreasing soil quality, and other farms in the area competed with cattle. The most money was to be made with the production and processing of Flax to make linen fabric, which would then be used by his mother’s shop and sold to wholesalers. During the first years of his ownership, the farm business went well. However, the increasing industrialization and rise of steam-powered weaving mills made it increasingly difficult to compete. Large factories were able to produce the same fabrics at much lower prices and sometimes even better quality. He, therefore, switched to more intricate handmade designs, which machines were not able to copy, and he sold his fabrics directly to tailor shops and fashion houses. This proved to be a good switch, but demand was quite low in this niche market, and it cost a lot of time to make an intricate fabric.

The high workload and constant worries often led him to seek solace in the local tavern with a drink. After an episode of drunkenness, he fell and hit a bar, leading to a trip to the hospital. The farm is situated in a bogland that extends from the Wester WüsteWester Wüste. The bogland consists of several ponds that residents of the area can use for retting flax. The farm used to be located in a drier area, but due to over-farming and deforestation, the soil quality has decreased, making farming more challenging.

The farm is composed of a primary building, which is both a home for the family and a shelter for some of the higher-priced animals. On the ground floor, one can find the kitchen and living room, along with two small bedrooms that used to be part of the barn floor. Additionally, there is a small weaving room on the ground floor. The rest of the floor is reserved for the animals, including a large stable for the horse, a pig stable, and a chicken coop. On the second floor are two bedrooms, a storage area, and a hayloft. Apart from the main building, there is a stable for the cattle, located close to the primary building.

They also keep the fields weed-free for rye and buckwheat. The cattle are moved from the stable to the fields during this time. In summer, flax, rye, and buckwheat crops are harvested, starting with rye and buckwheat, followed by flax. In autumn, the flax is put into nearby ponds for the retting process and left to dry afterwards. The rye and buckwheat are threshed and winnowed before being taken to the local mill to be ground into flour. The farmers also slaughter or sell some of the cattle to ensure a steady number of mouths to feed during winter. Before winter, they plant new rye or flax on different fields to maintain soil quality. During winter, they break, scutch, and hack the flax fibres to prepare them for spinning and weaving.

Family

The Lutz family is primarily composed of farmers who reside in the VöhrenVöhrenThe District of Vöhren is located on the border between the Kingdoms of the Netherlands and Hanover. Most of the area is covered by a dense, ancient forest called Grenn… district of Kilden. Most members either currently live or have previously lived on the Lutz estate, a small farmhouse where they breed cattle and grow crops, lately mainly known for linen production. The property has been owned by the family for generations, and it is typically inherited by the eldest (male) child. Family members usually continue working on the estate until they reach old age and often remain there until they pass away. Female members are traditionally expected to marry and start their own families within the region. The majority of farmers in the area face challenges in making a living, but they persist in working hard to maintain their farms out of pride and respect for their long-standing traditions, even at personal cost.
