On January 4, 1853, Joel’s father, was found dead in his bed by his wife. He passed away quietly in his sleep. From that moment on, Joel became the owner of the butchery, and he continued to manage it in the same way his father and grandfather did. His hard work meant his family could live a comfortable life in the city.
